Day 18 - Saturday, 29th Sept. - Hong Kong

An early start as we had the appointment with the tailor at 9am but unfortunately when we got there, they told us it wouldn't be ready for final fitting until 11.30.  That really messed up our day as we couldn't then venture too far, so we strolled up to Kowloon Park which was very leafy and much cooler and in the lovely ponds were many pretty, pink Flamingos.  Coffee in Maccas and back to the tailor, and it's still not ready, we were not happy!  They suggested we go the Ladies Markets and guaranteed the sports coat would not need any more alterations and we would have time to pick it up before we sailed.

When the taxis wouldn't stop for us, we decided to bite the bullet and try the underground subway.  Sounds ridiculous, but absolutely everything was so 'foreign' – there are lengthy walkways going in all directions for the different train lines and finding the right one was the first challenge – the locals were very friendly and helpful though.  Next the fare machine, which was reasonably easy and with a 'single ticket' in hand passed through the turnstile and down a massive escalator and onto the station, only to have a young lady run up to us and tell us we had left our tickets in the machine!!!  Back up to the information booth and were issued exit tickets first, along with new entry tickets – we are now getting a hang of things!!  Just 3 stops to Mong Kok Station and up to the Ladies Markets (not just ladies stuff) – a very, very long stretch of stalls on either side – the usual shirts, shoes, bags, jewellery, etc., etc., but did manage to buy a few small bargains.

Colin's jacket was a perfect fit, thank heavens and it was back 'home' and time to bid this port farewell.  The amazing sail out of Hong Kong (which actually means Fragrant Harbour) was absolutely mind blowing with the masses of high rise apartment and office blocks on either side of us…. wish the photos could do it justice!!  Interesting to see that some of the locals don't want to live in high rise and are happy to live in their water village.

We had a birthday boy on our table tonight and it was fun catching up with our dinner mates and exchanging our tales and adventures over the last couple of days at our new dining table in the Regency Dining Room, amongst some nice friendly folk – and we now have a window which will be nice when we start travelling south again.  Showtime was Ivor Richards, a comedian who was very good.
