Day 30 - Thursday, 11th Oct. - Scenic Sailing – Iwo Jima

Around 9am this morning we started our scenic cruise around the island of Iwo Jima, which is just south of the Japanese mainland.   It is actually an extinct volcano and although most of the island is low lying, it suddenly rises to an altitude of 400 feet at the southern end, which is where the iconic photograph of U.S. Marines "raising the Flag on Iwo Jima", which inspired a statue recreation of the event at the U.S Marine Corp in Arlington, Virginia.  This particular spot sealed its place forever in World War II history - fought between the Japanese and American troops, this bloody battle lasted 36 days, killing thousands on both sides.  It was from this location that the aircraft carrying the A-Bomb made its triumphant flight and ultimate conquest.

We did have a commentary during the morning from the Bridge which was extremely interesting.  Around 3,000 Japanese soldiers continued to hide in the extensive network of underground tunnels fearing the worst, though those that surrendered were often treated with compassion by the U.S. troops.  Today a peaceful monument stands on the island at the U.S. Marine landing site, commemorating the soldiers on both sides who fell during the infamous Battle of Iwo Jima.

It was such a beautiful day at sea as well, very humid in fact – so much so that the movie I took is totally fogged up!!  The girls won a match at Canasta, so we are even – go the girls!!  The afternoon was spent outside enjoying the warmth and relaxing before another grueling walk.

We went to a great pre-dinner show tonight called 'Maggie Presents "Life's A Lemon" and she was just so funny, although a little naughty, but she can get away with anything that lady.
